Regular visitors to Jackpotjoy and Virgin Games will have noticed some changes with regards their promotions. Cashback offers, promotional rewards and bingo bonuses have been replaced with Box Bonanza games. Visit any of these Bally's brands - as well as newcomers such as Double Bubble Bingo, Megaways Casino and Monopoly Casino - on a regular basis and you'll see that Box Bonanza games are pretty much always available to be won. But what exactly is a Box Bonanza game?
All About Box Bonanza Games
Box Bonanza Games are simply games that give you the chance to win cash prizes. However you need to participate in promotions - such as a prize draw - in order to win one. If you're awarded a Box Bonanza Game then you can play it when you next login to the site where you won it. When loaded, you'll be presented with three boxes and your task is to select one of the three boxes. The box is then opened to hopefully reveal a cash prize. Note that the game will have a maximum prize (e.g. up to £50) and you can win anything from 0 to £50. As far as we're aware the games do not mean a guaranteed prize.
Win Cash Prizes
However if you do win something then the prize is paid out as cash and therefore comes with no wagering terms. This means that the money can be withdrawn provided you, as the player, have met previous wagering conditions. It's the no wagering element that makes the Box Bonanza offer slightly better than previous promos where you could get cashback bonuses or win a share of a bonus pot but then be lumbered with hefty wagering terms. Importantly try and play any won games within 7 days! The reason for this is that a Box Bonanza Game actually costs you 20p to play. But if you play within the first 7 days of it being awarded to you, then Jackpotjoy, Virgin Games or whoever will waive the 20p cost. In other words it'll be free. You can still play the game up to 14 days after it being awarded. However if you play the game then you'll need to contact the Customer Support Team to arrange the payment. We suspect that most players will play any wins immediately after award.
Goodbye Bonus Money
So why have Jackpotjoy and others on the Gamesys platform turned to using this format? Why not just award cash prizes or bonuses? As we've mentioned a few times, The UK Government has burdened online operators with hefty taxation laws on gambling bonuses. This means it costs operators a lot more to pay out bonus money. However, it's our understanding, that they can pay out cash prizes without incurring this bonus tax. By using games operators can also seem more generous. For example 100 x £50 prizes would cost £5000. But 100 x Box Bonanza Games up to £50 could potentially be £5000 but more than likely will be a lot less. This hasn't stopped them becoming a permanent feature and if anything they're now offered on almost every slots and bingo promotion.
Our Verdict
At launch the Box Bonanzas were not that popular with players who have enjoyed previous promos - we did see some dissent in the chatrooms. Unfortunately business conditions dictate that bonuses are slowly being eradicated by many operators. We think Jackpotjoy and co have come up with a decent alternative to cashback bonuses and pot shares - although other operators haven't followed suit.
