Fishin' Frenzy

The game that started it all was launched in 2017. Like Big Bass Bonanza, Fishin' Frenzy is a 3x5 slot with 10 paylines. The game's background is the deep blue sea and as you'd expect the paytable icons consist of fish themed elements. The top paying symbol is a pelican that pays x2000 for a full win line. Other symbols include reels, bait box, fish and rubber ring. The low paying elements are the card symbols (10, J, Q, K and A) all of which have fishy style designs. A boat scatter symbol and wilds may also pop up on the reels. Get 3, 4 or 5 scatters to activate the bonus round of 10, 15 or 20 spins. During the bonus round if the fisherman appears on the reel then he'll reel in the value of any fish shown on the reels to create a win.

The Big Catch

There's always a bigger fish and The Big Catch was the first sequel to Fishin' Frenzy. At first glance it looks identical to it's predecessor. It has the same design, same symbols and even the same pay table. The main difference occurs during the free spins bonus round. This plays as the original game with fish values creating wins when the fisherman appears on the reels. If during the free spins you collect four fishermen then this upgrades the value of the fisher (so you get a bigger catch) and you also pick up extra free spins. The RTP (Return To Play) for The Big Catch is the same for the original game.

The Big Splash

Once you've caught a big fish you need to try and catch a bigger one. And to take Fishin' Frenzy a step further along came The Big Splash. The game developers once again opted to keep the format the same for this version of Fishin' Frenzy but again opted to make tweaks to the bonus round. Instead of collecting extra spins with four fishermen appearing during the free spins, players would get extra benefits with just two. At the start of the bonus round and at selected stages a pick a fish element adds extra interest to the game (e.g other symbols would get tags, extra fisherman added to the reels). The extra spins and mutliplier for four fisherman however still applies. One thing to note is that in The Big Splash the top paying symbols only return x700.

The Big Catch 3

Blueprint Gaming do like to revamp their flagship fishing game time and time again. The most recent version is The Big Catch 3 (a follow up to The Big Catch 2 and The Big Catch). It's the same 5x3 10 reel slot as the original but the top paying symbols (fisherman and pelican) now only pay x200. However there's a new worms symbol which if it appears on the screen collects all the fish values as a win. During each spin any fish or worms are added to the net at the top of the reels. Collect enough fish to add a modifier including free spins, cash collect, extra fish and extra fishermen. The Big Catch 3 also features a Power Play feature where for x5 your wager you can play with reels of just fish, scatters and the fisherman. The aim of Power Play is to give you more chances to fill the modifier net and hit the bonus rounds.

Big Bass or Fishin Frenzy?

Having looked at numerous versions of Big Bass and Fishin' Frenzy games are we able to decide which fishing slot is the catch of the day? Both are basically a 5x3 slot with 10 paylines and gameplay is similar in that the main interest comes during the bonus round. Both games have a simplicity about them which makes them appealing, although Fishin' Frenzy does give us a little more Vegas feels. Both series of games don't really deviate too far from the original but we do like that Big Bass has at least tried to push the fishing theme by adding boxing and retro versions just to mix things up. The RTPs of the original games are quite similar so there's not that much to choose between them. Try them both and see which one hooks you in the most.
