Bingo Brands Best Efforts For April Fool's Day
Published On 2nd April 2025
April Fool's Day used to be a fun event where media companies squeezed in feasible sounding stories like Spaghetti Trees and the public sucked it up. Today, thanks to social media, it's become a relentless stream of brands desperate for engagement sometimes with the lamest of ideas, sometimes with something quite clever. Waitrose for example suggested that only over 18s would now be allowed to buy their Easter Eggs, Flymo showed off their new Airfryer and Hotel Chocolat Launched their new paint range that smelt of chocolate. Bingo hasn't been immune from the fool frivolities. The biggest "jape" came courtesy of the founders of MrQ who launched Square Bingo as a test of the online bingo industry. But what about bingo brands in 2025? How did they treat April Fool's Day?
Sun Bingo's BingoBot 3000
For April 1st Sun Bingo announced the launch of a brand new bingo caller. Powered by AI they named the caller BingoBot 3000 and according to Sun Bingo "it guarantees no bad calls". They then explain that it might not be 100% reliable as if "it malfunctions, then it might call the numbers in reverse". Sorry Sun Bingo but this is a pretty lame effort that frankly makes little sense. What exactly is a bad bingo call? And how would it know what the numbers are in reverse because they've not all been drawn (yes we have thought about this). An additional bit of April Fool hilarity from Sun Bingo appeared in a reel that explains that "Game Night Live is cancelled" because of presenter disagreements. This just isn't in the same league as the famous back staff "fight" which appeared on Grandstand many years ago.
Foxy Fools Helpline
Foxy Bingo took a different approach to April Fool's Day with a reel influenced by Injury Lawyers For You. In a clip that went out on Facebook and Instagram they announced the launch of The Foxy Fools Helpline. The presenter, looking highly serious, starts off by questioning if "have you been duped by harmless April Fools pranks". This is followed by asking if you've believed pranks such as mustard flavour yoghurt or dating apps for dogs. If so then you've been duped and need the Foxy Fools Helpline. Sadly there's no actual number to call but followers were asked to share their favourite pranks in the comments. Disappointingly this approach didn't get that much engagement but unsurprisingly no one mentioned that they'd fallen for the BingoBot 3000 caller. Overall though this was a clever idea!
Dream Products
Foxy's sister site, Gala Bingo, also took an alternative approach to April Fool's Day. They put together a list of dream products and asked followers to vote for the one they'd love to be real. The products included a spa in a bottle, club in a disco ball, convo recall smart glasses, self cleaning bed sheets, self refilling fridge, immersive bingo games, bingo crystal ball, a mug that refills itself and flavoured mood lipstick. We wonder if Gala's creative team sat down to come up with an idea for a prank, couldn't decide which item was best and ran out of time so decided to run a survey instead. That said we do like the idea of a refilling mug, but the self refilling fridge could be better. Again we've thought about this far too long, but could you put say £1000 in the fridge, take it out and it then refills with another £1000?
Tombola Bingo Safety Helmets
One item that Gala Bingo didn't have on their list was a bingo safety helmet. However this was a new product from Tombola! The idea is that players wear the helmets when playing bingo so as to protect themselves from injury when jumping for joy and celebrating a win. The helmets look like giant bingo balls (an influence from the bingohead days of Bet365 Bingo) and come in Tombola green. Firstly let's hope The UKGC don't see these items because they'll probably think players genuinely do need to wear safety gear whilst playing online. Secondly we don't think that many players need this product because it's almost impossible to win a bingo game on Tombola! Anyway this prank didn't get too much engagement from players but one Facebook follower did comment "I'd just saw the best April fools on ladbible but it's a close one seeing this now hahaha". Really?
OJO Funhouse Board Game
Joining Tombola in the new product stakes is PlayOJO who, on 1st April, announced the launch of their first board game called OJO Funhouse. The game was due to be launched on 15th April which immediately makes you wonder are they being serious or not? They even put together a little blog post explaining how to play the game. They describe OJO Funhouse as the "only game where you can hit the jackpot while battling your mates for the ultimate prize - bragging rights". As with all the above it got little to no engagement from followers which is a shame because it's actually not a bad idea. If the board game visuals had been slightly better then this could have made you think twice.
April Fool's Bingo Bonus
Finally the only bingo brand we found referencing April Fool's Day was Betfred Bingo. They decided not to put out anything funny and simply offered players a £2 Bingo Bonus for posting the best prank you've done or experienced. Only 10 players would collect a bonus but in fact just 8 players responded. But at least Betfred Bingo generated more engagement with this effort than some of the brands above who tried to be a little more creative. The reactions to all the pranks we've covered here suggests that either they're not worth the effort or that bingo brands need to come up with something better to generate a bit more virality. Alternatively it could simply be demonstrating just how limited social engagement is for some brands on the likes of Facebook and Instagram.
