Street Bingo Games Generate Community Spirit

Bingo has become a popular way for uniting neighbours and friends during the current health crisis. People have been hosting their own versions of the game to keep spirits high. For example Andy Wiggins of Llantwit Major in South Wales hosted a game of bingo for his entire street. Meanwhile over in Round Rock, Texas, players were surprised when Hollywood star Matthew McConaughey joined in as a bingo caller on a Zoom call.
The Enclave, an assisted living community in Round Rock, Texas, invited McConaughey to join them as a bingo caller. He was joined by his wife Camila, their two kids and his mum Kay as they joined the fun. After calling the numbers McConaughey chatted to the residents and answered their questions. News of his involvement hit the mainstream media and has featured on many channels. Hopefully other A-Listers will try their hand as bingo callers to help boost the spirits of those who are isolating at this time.
Street Bingo In The UK
The residents of a street in Llantwit Major sadly didn't get the Hollywood treatment but they did get to play bingo (Unilad). Andy Wiggins printed off bingo cards and distributed them to his neighbours. The family set up and amp and speaker so that participants could hear the number calls. Prizes were distributed, well within social distancing rules, and these included bottles of prosecco and the highly prized toilet roll. Further games are planned!
The Shropshire Star reports a similar story to the one in Llantwit Major. Craig Slow became a bingo caller for the evening after inviting his neighbours to join in for games. He had printed off bingo cards and distributed them first before eyes down on Sunday afternoon. Craig said that the games helped raised spirits! He even ended up with gifts of easter eggs and wine. That must be the first time a bingo caller has done better than the players!
Host Your Own Street Bingo
There was a bingo street party down Settle Street in Yorkshire too (The BBC). Sophie Haytonand her neighbours organised the game which saw residents of the street joining in whilst respecting social distancing rules. More bingo sessions are planned as the organisers said it was a great way to meet people on the road. Most certainly this kind of event does help to unite the community and reduce the effects of isolation that many may be feeling at this difficult time.
