Save Our Shirt Launches At Paddy Power
Published On 19th July 2019
You have to take your hat off to whoever is in Paddy Power's marketing department. They manage to create the biggest noise with what seems to be the most simplest of ideas. This season the bookmaker are sponsoring Huddersfield Town and this week they launched a new shirt. The shirt had Paddy Power written across it in the style of a pagaent sash. It's safe to say it was awful.
The media and fans immediately took to social media to condemn the monstrosity. However some did pick up on the fact that all may not be as it seemed. After all, this is Paddy Power and they're not always straightforward when it comes to promotions. Shirt sponsors have certain rules and rule geeks were soon pointing out that Huddersfield Town's new shirt would break The FA's shirt guidelines. However, just as the outrage started to simmer - Paddy Power unveiled the real kit and an exciting fan's campaign.
Unsponsoring Huddersfield Town
And by launching the new kit they've only gone and managed to create a further buzz surrounding their sponsorship of The Terriers. The sash has gone and so has Paddy Power's logo. Instead they're unsponsoring Huddersfield Towen by not having their logo on the shirts at all. The idea is to campaign to give the shirts back to the fans - without them emblazoned with corporate logos. What a fab idea!!
We think that many football supporters will love the idea of having a replica shirt without a sponsor logo. Fans want to wear their shirts to show their support of a club, not be a walking advert for an unknown company or huge corporation. We think Paddy Power's move may well put pressure on other clubs to follow suit. As they so eloquently point out - they know their place and it's not on your shirt.
Stroke Of Genius
Media commentators and football fans will love this idea, but there's also a stroke of genius in the mix. As Paddy Power are a gambling company they cannot have their logo emblazoned across kits for children. Therefore the "unsponsoring" doesn't effect the many youngsters who will want a new shirt for the up and coming season. Betting companies are also under pressure to reduce eyeballs on their advertising so there's another tick.
So it's only the older fan's shirts and player shirts that will be effected. However, whenever any football fan sees Huddersfield Town on TV they'll automatically know that Paddy Power are the sponsors because they're not on the shirts. Until other sponsors follow suit, Paddy Power have the logoless shirt market all to themselves.
