The William Hill Bonus Drop Needs A Revamp

Published On 10th October 2022

Over the last few weeks we've been regularly playing the various free games that many online slots and bingo brands offer. From Paddy Power's Wonder Wheel through to Instant Spins at Ladbrokes we've been seeing which sites are worth visiting on a regular basis. Now we should really have done this in a much more scientific way and provided data but we forgot to log every visit and result. However - and if you play these games yourself - what we're about to write may well resonate. The simple fact is that playing Coral's Reward Grabber and Ladbrokes Instant Spin regularly results in wins of a few free spins. Meanwhile we've played The Bonus Drop at William Hill daily for the last fortnight and didn't win once. Not even a bonus offer! Is it time therefore for William Hill to revamp The Bonus Drop?

What Is The Bonus Drop

The Bonus Drop was launched at William Hill in 2019. Apart from a brief hiatus when it was replaced by The Bonus Explorer, the free to play game has been available daily to qualifying players ever since. The game is based on a simple coin drop mechanism and where it lands at the bottom denotes whether you win or lose. As the coin drops through the 'virtual machine' it bumps against pins which can help or hinder it's pathway to a win. If the coin lands in a red cross section then you lose but if it lands on a gift box or cash prize then you're awarded with a deposit bonus, free spins or real money. Potentially you can win up to £1000 playing The Bonus Drop although to date we've never heard any mention of any William Hill customer winning the top prize. Of course this doesn't mean it's never happened but it would be nice to have real evidence that at some point someone somewhere has actually won.

No Chance Of Winning

So why do we think it's time to revamp The Bonus Drop? First off it's no fun playing any game - free or otherwise - if you don't win. Free play games are designed to keep customers returning to a site daily. The aim is to keep you engaged with the brand and potentially go on and have a little gamble. However that engagement is ultimately lost if players get bored of the game and/or never win. A good example of this is Tombola. They've had different incarnations of their own daily game plus revamped the prize structures. They know that new games keeps players interested and wins - albeit small ones of 25p - help maintain that interest. We presume that the folks who balance the probability of winning for Rewards Grabber and Instant Spins also figure out that dishing out a couple of free spins every few days works out as a decent way to keep players interested in the brand. Ok there's no sniff of the big prizes (although Tombola do create £5000 winners) but there's at least a chance of getting some kind of reward. With The Bonus Drop it now feels as though there's no chance of winning anything ever.

Free Spins At William Hill Vegas

Pop in to William Hill Vegas on a regular basis though and you'll often be able to collect free spins on a featured slot. For example at time of writing you could login and accept five free spins on the Starlite Fruits game. You don't need to play The Bonus Drop to receive them, just simply opt-in to collect them. This is great if you like free spins and fancy trying a new slot but look closely at Rewards Grabber and Instant Spins and that's exactly what they're doing when they dish out their prizes. In other words Ladbrokes, Coral and William Hill are all happy do giveaway free spins, but the latter are doing it in addition to The Bonus Drop game. However if The Bonus Drop game isn't rewarding players then it becomes a pointless promotional tool and loses it's reason to be. In our view it'd make more sense to use The Bonus Drop to let players think they've "won" five free spins on Starlite Fruits rather than just give them to them freely. This makes the player think The Bonus Drop is great and not just something that they never ever seem to win on anymore.

Bingo Welcome Offers

Another reason for revamping The Bonus Drop is William Hill Bingo. For the last couple of years there's been no welcome bonus for new players wanting to join William Hill Bingo. Instead they can register and play The Bonus Drop as no deposit is needed or pick up a welcome offer from the Vegas or Sportsbook section. Aside from Boylessport we can't think of any other major bingo brand that doesn't offer a bonus for new bingo players! It does feel like that either William Hill have decided that bingo isn't worth their time anymore or they've simply forgot to switch it back on. If a new bingo player does sign up and play The Bonus Drop then - based on our recent experiences - are not getting any rewards. Most certainly they'd never find free bingo games, deposit bonuses or bingo tickets in The Bonus Drop prize make-up. This really needs to change because why would a bingo player join William Hill for nothing when they could join, for example, Buzz Bingo and pick up a bingo bonus and the chance to play their free daily game where there's free spins, bingo tickets and prizes on offer. The Bonus Drop was a revelation three years ago but it feels stale and other brands are now stealing ahead with better games and innovation.
