Play Day At The Races - 40 Ball Bingo

Published On 7th July 2020

If you love bingo and are quite partial to the old gee-gees as well then William Hill Bingo's exclusive game might just appeal. It's called Day At The Races and it's a 40 ball bingo game that features horses. Initially we expected that the calls would be horse names and along the lines of Pirates at Tombola. Sadly it's just numbers but there's plenty of racing related elements to the game. So let's get under starters orders and take a closer look.

  • Open: 24/7
  • Jackpots: 10, 25 and 50 Step Jackpots

  • Special Features: Galloping Number Calls

How To Play Day At The Races Bingo

Unlike other themed rooms which tend to be fairly basic, Day At The Races takes on the racing theme and goes with it and some. It doesn't look like your typical bingp room and we like that a lot. The bingo tickets, which can be seen and purchased at the bottom of the screen, are overlayed on the starting gates of a racecourse. At the top of the room you'll see a jockey and horse waiting patiently for eyes down. When the numbers start being called the horse gallops along until the games finish. Trumpets and fanfares punctuate the racing and celebrate the winners.

As a 40 ball game each bingo ticket you purchase comprises 8 numbers split into two groups of four. Each group of four is called a cluster and there are prizes for completing one cluster and the full house. Tickets cost 5p or 10p and you can play between 1 and 50 tickets per game. Once the game gets underway then it's pretty much the same process as any other bingo variant. The numbers are called and the aim is to complete one cluster and/or the full house on your ticket. The first player to do this will win the prizes.

Golden Rosettes Make Jackpots

As well as the one cluster and full house prizes there are three community jackpots that can be won. These are the And They're Off Jackpot, The Final Furlong Jackpot and The Winners Enclosure Jackpot. These prizes are dished out when 10, 25, or 50 golden rosettes are collected across the games. Up to two rosettes can be collected per game - they pop up during number calls - and for the jackpot to be won the counter must sit on 10, 25 or 50. If the counter passes these points - for example it goes from 9 to 11 then the community jackpot is carried over to the next milestone.

If the counter does hit the bronze, silver or gold milestones then all roomies playing the game at the time will collect an equal share of the pot. At time of writing these were fixed at 15 for step 25 and 50 for step 50. The same jackpot format occurs for other 40 ball games that you'll find on Virtue Fusion sites. In all the times that we've played Day At The Races it does seem to take an age for the golden rosettes to amass. Also don't expect the jackpot to be be dished out if you start playing at milestone 9, 24 and 49.

Our Verdict

Day At The Races is quite a fun version of bingo. The horse racing animation adds a bit of interest as do the numerous fanfares. We're pretty sure Rossini's William Tell Overture features in their somewhere too. Being picky, we'd like to see the game improved with horse names instead of numbers. The Grand National has 40 runners so 40 horse names could be easily done. A regular horse racing commentator doing the calls would also be a fun addition. Without these elements we really think that William Hill missed a trick.

This isn't the first exclusive bingo variant game at William Hill. It joins the 50 ball Bingo Bowl room which is based on 10 pin bowling. Of the two, Day At The Races doesn't attract as many players which does mean lower prize pots. On the other hand it does mean a good chance of winning if you decide to venture into the room. In our view players should embrace the racing theme and enjoy an exciting 40 ball game.
