Not Everyone Wants To Be A Free Sun Winner

Yesterday we told you about an Everyone's A Winner promotion that Sun Bingo are involved with alongside The Sun newspaper. The tabloid have been sending out free copies of the paper to celebrate The World Cup and inside there's a code that people can use on the bingo site. The code will win them a prize of anything from between £2 and £10,000. However not everyone has been pleased to receive their free copy of the paper!

This kind of comment is pretty standard. As well as being dropped straight in the recycling free copies have been trashed, put on the fire and placed in the cat basket (or litter tray).

However we did like this idea! Someone has painted over the front page which depicts various English heroes and characters. They've then placed the art on eBay and raising funds for The Woodland Trust!

Sending back the newspaper to sender seems to be the most popular choice for those unimpressed with their free copy. Some have even taken to videoing their returns and putting them on Youtube. Reasons for return including being anti-Murdoch, saying no to Page 3 and of course most importantly the issues surrounding Hillsborough.

Given the hatred towards The Sun in the Liverpool area it seems incredulous that the paper would even try and target households in that area. According to The Liverpool Echo, posties in the area have even refused to deliver the freebies - and they've even got the support of the local MP.

All in all this is turning out to be a massive PR fail for The Sun. The whole episode has even dragged in politicians and Ed Miliband managed to turn off millions of potential voters when he was pictured with the free newspaper. Miliband was shown posing with the paper but has since issued an apology. Sun Bingo probably will come out of the proceedings relatively unscathed although as we suspected it will mean very few of the potential 20million prizes on offer will be paid out.

However at least one person on Twitter was hoping to take advantage of the situation...

It's a nice idea Sam, but unfortunately Sun Bingo's Everyone's A Winner promotion is only one entry per person! Overall though it would seem that the voice of the people is the big winner with regards to this whole promotion and that perhaps marketing folk and politicians need to start sitting up, taking notice and listening.
