Did You Play Downton Abbey Bingo

A new bingo phenomena is strolling into town. Shows like Masterchef, Strictly Come Dancing and X Factor have become so cliched that some sites - including ourselves - are issuing fun game cards so that you can play buzzword bingo. The aim of the game is to play along with friends/family and see if you can get a full house.

For example in The X Factor you may be able to cross off a square if a contestant goes on about their journey or if Louis argues with Gary. In Strictly there are things like Len's "Sevennn" and Brucie's bad jokes that are great for buzzword games.

However, the link between TV shows and buzzword games may just have started to get out of hand. The Mirror posted a tweet on Sunday night encouraging followers to play Downton Abbey bingo with their "hilarious scorecard". You could cross off your "numbers" with things like a dog's bum in the credits, Lady Rose flirting with a commoner and spotting a cameo from a clapped-out celebrity no body.

The desire for #downtonabbeybingo has been as popular as the dark attack story line which emerged on the period drama last week. Only two people tweeted with the hashtag! Perhaps more people were playing along at home?

Downton Abbey Bingo wasn't the only buzzword game that emerged over the last few days. Talksport decided that football fans needed something extra to make Friday night's World Cup qualifier more exciting and so introduced "England v Montenegro Twitter Bingo".

The aim of the game was to find references on Twitter to some of the "numbers". These included Joey Barton was right, Joey Barton was wrong and moaning about James Milner. No doubt they'll be a follow up on Tuesday for the Poland game - expect plenty of references to 1973, Polish goalkeepers and maybe the odd mention of Brian Clough.

So was #montenegrobingo any more popular than Downton Abbey's version? Well, only two people got involved with the hashtag, but they did tweet five times whereas Downton only managed three total tweets. Therefore we're declaring Talksport's game the winner on penalties.

Perhaps the real story here is that TV buzzword bingo games aren't as popular as many of us would like. Yes they feel column inches and make nice articles but not much else. Now convert these fun ways to play bingo into drinking games and that may well be a different story.
