Are You Gonna Bingo - Revisiting Bingo TV Ads

Back in 2018 Sun Bingo launched one of the best bingo advertising campaigns since Mecca devised dancing cactii. Whilst most bingo brands looked to catchy hits to create ear worms (Galalala, Mecca-rena, B.I.N.G.O), Sun Bingo opted to go for Grime. They decided to ditch the popular red balls and Joanna Page's voiceovers in favour of a completely different approach. In came comedian Jayde Adams to star in the campaign plus she got to sing a version of Funky Dee's Grime track 'Are You Gonna Bang Doe'. However the song was now "Are You Gonna Bingo".

You might be asking why we're revisiting this particular advert. Well back in the day we had an extensive review section of TV adverts for online bingo. These included the Youtube videos of the ads and some fun (and sometimes harsh) comments about the quality. Some were good, some were mad and some were just plain awful. In the early days of online bingo there were ads everywhere but by 2017 the numbers had dropped plus The UKGC had stepped in to drain the fun out of things. It also meant that uploaded content to Youtube was removed by operators who were concerned about compliance. In short it kind of made our adverts archive untenable as it contained few active videos. Therefore we dropped the section. It's a shame really because it did provide a useful insight into the development of bingo through TV ads. Thankfully we can still talk about them (well to a point, for example some celebs who previously endorsed brands can't be mentioned!) and The Sun's Are You Gonna Bingo is worth a trip down memory lane.
Are You Gonna Bingo Lyrics
The video kicks off with Adams at a bus stop where she asks one girl if she's got to be somewhere and another what's she's doing. Both are asked "are you gonna bingo" and that's the cue for what turns out to be quite a catchy track. The purpose behind the advert is to show that you can play Sun Bingo on your mobile where ever you are. During the ad, Adams and her posse are found rapping at the bus station, in Blackpool, in a field, on the red carpet, at a tea plantation and even on the back of a horse. As we sat through the ad multiple times to write out the lyrics here they are again so you can singalong.

Bingo Ad Of The Year?
At the time we concluded our piece with "If you're like us and unfamiliar with Grime music then the track is based on Are You Gonna Bang Doe by Funky Dee. Sun Bingo have delivered one of the most highly entertaining bingo ads in a number of years. The song is catchy and Jayde Adams is a breath of fresh air from the usual celebrity endorsements. This is a very strong contender for bingo advert of the month". The last sentence was a bit of hopeful as by 2018 very few bingo operators were putting out new TV ads. They were either regurgitating what they'd already done, opting for TV show sponsorship or just not bothering. Most certainly smaller brands who'd used television to try and propel themselves to the big leagues had given up on the small screen. Interestingly since this ad we can't recall Sun Bingo doing any more. They did use Jayde - and her costars - in a series of bumpers for Jeremy Kyle but it's actually hard to remember the last time they did any kind of TV ad.
