Can Coincidences Happen In Online Bingo?

Published On 16th March 2023

Coincidence is defined as a "remarkable concurrence of events or circumstances without apparent causal connection". Over the 25 years or so that we've been involved with curating online competitions and writing articles we've noted a lot of coincidences. We've also noted a lot of things that evidently weren't coincidental and pretty suggestive of another company being a little bit nefarious when it comes to our content. Over the last 18 months there have been a number of times we've wondered why another portal has chosen to select a certain topic or post an article. So much so that we devised a few experiments to confirm our theory that is wasn't just due to coincidence. We did another one recently and - well you decide.

The Background

Sadly Loquax Bingo isn't the biggest portal in this sector, but up against a continuing wave of compliance, partnerships for the big boys and a tough market, we muddle along. That muddling along is made a tad more difficult when another site's writer feels you're their constant inspiration. Now in this sector where the subject matter can be limiting or there's breaking news there will be elements of overlapping content. The same way ITV, BBC, Sky etc will all cover the same subject when it happens. However occasionally we - and others - may go slightly off piste or release content in a certain sequence. We've done that a few times now and noted that another portal then followed suit. That seem weird to us and that's why we're a little agitated. The problem is that unless said site copies us verbatim then there's sadly nothing we can do. But we can set them up and write an article at their expense.

The Experiment

The experiment was very simple. On 6th March we wrote about the one million spins promotion that's running at Jackpotjoy. Now that's not the experiment. It's a big promo running across multiple sites so of course other portal's are going to cover it. The experiment is within the content. Firstly at the top of the piece we only named Virgin Games, Rainbow Riches Casino and Monopoly Casino as partners of Jackpotjoy. We deliberately didn't mention Megaways or Double Bubble. The second part came further down when we selected the list of qualifying slots: "Wish Upon A Jackpot Megaway, Hope Diamond, Into The Wild Megaways, Cop The Lot and Hot Frootastic". Now this promotion had a huge list of options for potential qualifying slots. Well over 100 different options to be exact. Why did we pick the five slots named? Look at the order of them and then spell out the word which can be created from the first letter of each. Yes that's the experiment! There's a good chance of another site writing about the promotion but would they include the same list of sites and slots that have been specifically chosen by us?

The Results

On 15th March 2023 another bingo portal posted a short article about Jackpotjoy's One Million Spins promotion. At the top of that article they named the sister sites of Jackpotjoy as Monopoly Casino, Rainbow Riches Casino, and Virgin Games. No mention of Double Bubble or Megaways! Is it a coincidence? Maybe, maybe not, but it seems odd that they've omitted the same brands. However they then go on to highlight three qualifying games. They chose Cop The Lot, Hope Diamond, and Wish Upon a Jackpot Megaways. Well hang about that's three of the five that we deliberately selected because of the word that their first letters spelt. Is it a coincidence? To determine this we need to understand what are the chances of another writer picking three titles randomly out of a list of 100+ that match three of the five that we picked deliberately as part of a little experiment. It's roughly a 1 in 100 chance to pick one identical pick, 1 in 10,000 to get 2 and 1 in a million to get three. For us both to pick the same three ramps up the probability considerably. Obviously the probability of selecting those three titles from the five we listed is a lot less. In other words the probability of this being down to a simple coincidence is unlikely.

The Conclusion

The above pretty much tells us that another bingo writer is quite probably very inspired by the content that they see here on Loquax. We deliberately selected and ordered five titles from a mix of 100 to spell out a word and another portal manages to pick three of those five despite there being over 100 titles to select from if they're read the terms at Jackpotjoy. Of course it could be a coincidence but the chances of that are really slim. It's not even as if Cop The Lot and Hope Diamond are stand out slot titles from a list that included more popular names such as Deal Or No Deal What's In Your Box, The Goonies and Fishin' Frenzy. We realise that this article won't make much difference to the situation, although it might make the writer think a little bit more carefully before churning out their content in future.
