Daily Mail Claim Victory On Gambling Predators
Published On 16th January 2020
Yesterday we told you about the forthcoming credit card ban that's been imposed on the online gambling industry. Although this and other changes over the past couple of years have tidied up the industry for some it's still not enough. According to today's newspaper headlines The Daily Mail are claiming victory in their quest to stop the gambling predators.
According to reports the following incentives offered by gambling firms are under threat: pay to view streams, VIP experiences, cashback incentives and free bets and offers. Essentially everything that online casinos, bingo sites and sports betting brands use to advertise and encourage customers. We're fully supportive of any move that improves the industry and online gambling experience. If all participants are responsible then there's no reason why incentives, bonuses and VIP treatment can't be offered.
Stop The Gambling Predators
The fact that all online companies are required to be part of Gamstop by the end of March is a significant step (The BBC). This means anyone registering with Gamstop will not be able to gamble online. Removing credit cards as a way of funding accounts is another important step forward. Whether this will be enough to reduce problem gambling remains to be seen but the powers that be seem intent on eradicating problem gambling by shutting down the whole industry.
And with The Daily Mail campaigning to stop the gambling predators it's unlikely they will let things drop. Probably even more so now that Brexit is happening and they're being called out a lot for their attacks on Megan Markle. And of course as campiagners they've been whiter than white when it comes to online gambling. After all they've never ever encouraged their readers to wager online have they?
MailBingo.com?
Well yes they have! In 2006 you could join Mailbingo.com on the Cashcade network. On a very basic looking site players were encouraged to "join the bingo revolution" and get a 100% first deposit bonus or "up to £150 free". By 2008 The Daily Mail's Coffee Break bingo had moved to the St Minver platform. Again there was a 100% first deposit bonus on offer plus newbies got a £1 no deposit bonus as well as plenty of promotions.
And how do you incentivise players to join a bingo site? Well the new Daily Mail's Coffee Break Bingo offered their players the chance to win a holiday home in Spain. Not just any old holiday home either. This one was worth £250,000 and to our knowledge remains one of the biggest promotions offered to online bingo players. It's also worth noting that this all occurred at a time when there was less regulation within the online gambling industry.
Pink Ribbon Bingo
Despite the holiday home prize, Mailbingo.com didn't manage to ascend to the dizzy heights of Tombola, Foxy, Jackpotjoy, Gala, Sun Bingo and many others. By the end of 2011 the site was no more and instead players were redirected to Pink Ribbon Bingo, the site that uses bingo to support Breakthrough Breast Cancer. As far as we're aware that partnership ended in recent years and The Daily Mail now no longer has a gambling brand associated with it.
Interestingly other media outlets aren't as vocal about stopping the gambling predators. The Sun are associated with Sun Bingo, Sun Play and Sun Vegas whilst Mirror Bingo is still active. Daily Express and Daily Star have both had gambling sites in the bingo and slots arena but these have all now closed. As mentioned above we're happy to see improvements to online gambling. We just wonder whether The Daily Mail would be so vocal about problem gambing today had their own £250,000 house giveaway gamble paid off for them several years ago!
