Bingo Addict Steals From Community Nursery

As a rule we generally don't tend to comment or write about gambling addiction problems that feature in the newspapers. There's enough lineage written without us adding to the debate. However, when we saw the latest article from The Daily Mail there was something that caught our eye. According to reports "Bingo Addict" Wendy White ran up debts of £20,000 and even stole £2200 which left a nursery on verge of bankruptcy to fund her gambling.
The nursery wad Locking Stumps pre-school and Jason, who is part of the Loquax team, actually attended the Junior school way back in the early 80s. It's a small little village within Birchwood and it's not every day that you see it mentioned in the news. We're pretty sure no other bingo portal staff lived in that area so this article - if copied - will read very strangely on other sites. Anyway according to The Daily Mail White stole from the pre-school and it was only due to staff and local residents that the group was saved.
Staff worked for free for a number of months whilst money was raised. For her part, White was found guilty at Warrington Crown Court, but due to her debts was ordered only to pay back £1 of the £2200 that was embezzled. This has left people in shock and questioning the deterrent of others doing the same thing. However, White is now a pariah in the community something the judge highlighted as part of her punishment. Locking Stumps is a very small and close knit area - especially when it comes to the local school and playgroups - and it's no wonder that has happened.
As ever in these gambling addiction reports - and with The Daily Mail at the helm - it's online gambling that gets it in the neck. It's never mentioned that players can opt-out or that they can set their own limits. It's never mentioned that someone spending excessively is usually flagged up and that operators take the issue of problem gambling very seriously. That said, operators can always do more and we're all for stricter controls.
Of course this doesn't condone stealing to fund an addiction. We actually think the £1 "pay back" is absurd especially given that White's behaviour could have effected families who rely on the pre-nursery group. However, a lot of the responsibility for gambling has to fall on the player's shoulders. One of the comments on The Daily Mail says that "bingo adverts always show people enjoying themselves and dancing around" and that's why people get into debt. Three words: The National Lottery! One word: Euromillions: Two more words: Hector Riva.
Anyway with that rant over - more importantly we hope that Locking Stumps pre-school are now back on track and can put this sorry episode behind them!
