The Sack Race - Bet On Managers To Leave

The Sack Race is a popular betting feature, especially at the start of any new football season. The winner of the Sack Race is the first manager - usually Premier League - to lose their job. It's not the nicest of markets but it's understandable why punters like to have a flutter on it. With the way football is these days it's very unusual to go several months - for example to Christmas - without seeing at least one Premier League managerial casualty. A few bad results can usually see owners and boards worrying about their side's fortunes and deciding drastic change is needed. The favourites to go always tend to be at clubs that have struggled previously or have just been promoted but if you keep an eye on form, rumours and gossip you can often pick up wind of a departing manager whilst the odds are still favourable. The bookies are usually right with their favourites so that's another factor to keep an eye on if you choose to bet on this market.

Our View On The Sack Race

In the dim and distant past we have written articles on who was favourite for the current season's sack race. However with sportsbook brands curtailing their affiliate activity it's been difficult to spare time to put together content that ends up promoting Paddy Power, Betfair, Sky, Bet365 and William Hill. A number of bookies also now actively avoid The Sack Race odds because of potential for insider knowledge. And on reflection this isn't the nicest of markets. Betting on which manager will lose their job first seems to be scraping the barrel. Probably only second to betting on Sam Allardyce becoming the next manager of the team that has recently sacked their manager!

Managerial Markets

Aside from The Sack Race, many bookies will offer odds on the next manager of whatever club is looking like they're in need of a new man (or woman) at the helm. The markets tend to concentrate on just a few big clubs and perhaps national teams too (e.g. who will be the next England manager). Finding these markets can be tricky but usually they'll be located under 'Football' and then 'Specials'. For example at time of writing (September 2024) Ladbrokes have Erik Ten Hag and Russell Martin as potentials to be the first Premier League Managers to leave their jobs plus a market on who will be the next Manchester United Manager. Southampton are not worthy of their own market, however you could potentially use a bet builder or bet request - if the options are available - to build your own bet.
