Useful Tools Highlighted During Responsible Gambling Week

Published On 5th November 2019

Regular visitors to casino, bingo and sportsbook brands will have noticed that many are advertising Responsible Gambling Week. But what's it all about? Well it's the second year of an initiative involving many operators to get everyone talking about responsible gambling. It's a positive step from an industry that's increasingly coming under fire and pressure from many sides.

During Responsible Gambling Week (RGW) operators are taking the opportunity to highlight the many tools they offer to help people gamble safely all year round. These tools These tools include setting deposit limits, time keepers that remind you how long you've been playing, cooling off periods and self exclusion options.

Profit & Loss Tool

These tools are always there and available to everyone. In our view operators should be doing more to highlight these tools and not just relying on an annual awareness week. To be fair some brands are already doing this! Skybet's recent TV campaign highlighted the tools they offer their players including Profit & Loss.

The Skybet Profit & Loss tool lets you review how much you've won or lost at the site over a selected period. This is useful to show just how much you've spent - after all we sometimes under estimate how much we're playing. Hopefully this kind of tool can be implemented on other brands!

Scrabit

Skybet have also flagged up another useful tool that's not just ideal for checking your gambling habit. We're all glued to our mobile phones these days and with Scrabit you can learn just how much time you spend on your mobile - and your mobile usage habits.

Responsible Gambling Week isn't just about the operators. The week is supported by by gambling charities, GambleAware, GamCare, and YGam (Young Gamblers Education Trust), and by the Gambling Commission. These services are always at hand to assist and support anyone who is concerned by their gambling.

Banking Apps & Advert Exclusions

Responsible Gambling Week is a fabulous initiative although more needs to be done. Little by little changes are coming in. For example, Monzo, an online banking service, has an app that can block payments to gambling companies. We'd like to see the big banks as well as Paypal introduce similar functionality. We'd also like to see RGW highlighting this tool.

Another tool that needs highlighting is the option to exclude gambling from commercial breaks. This technology will be introduced by Sky in 2020. We expect that similar tech may well be introduced to limit gambling adverts online too. Additionally Sky have announced that from the 2019/2020 season that only a maximum of just one gambling ad will be shown per break.
