Sun Bets Closes As Tabcorp Pulls Out

Tabcorp UK Ltd have today announced that they will no longer be providing gaming services on behalf of Sun Bets. This means that the Sun Bets sportsbook, casino, vegas and live casino channels have closed down. Players are advised to withdraw any funds that they have on account as soon as possible.

The decision to close Sun Bets is based on commercial reasons. The Group Chief Executive of Tabcorp, David Attenborough, has cited performances below expectations and no expectation of improvement. The decision to close the Sun Bets site comes at a cost of £40million for Tabcorp (Reuters)!

Poor Performance

It's perhaps no surprise that the closure of Sun Bets has occurred. Tabcorp had previously warned of poor trading since Sun Bets launched in 2016 and it's future was under review (The Racing Post). We wonder whether a poor World Cup in betting terms was enough to make those in charge at Tabcorp take the decision to close things down?

The closure of Sun Bets doesn't effect other online gaming sites featuring the brand. Sun Bingo is a seperate entity as is Sun Play. The latter is a Nektan powered casino, but interestingly it's not given as much breathing space as bingo. Now would be a good time for Sun Play to absorb the casino and vegas players from Sun Bets?

What About Player Accounts

News UK, the owners of The Sun, say that they will remain in the betting and gaming business. It'll be interesting to see whether that means a new Sun Bets will emerge later in the year or in early 2019. For current players though that's meaningless as they now have to sort out their accounts.

If this is missed then Sun Bets will aim to refund your account on your registered card by 17th September 2018. Any funds that are unable to be refunded will be donated to GamCare.
