Ice Fishing Live Review
Fishing has become a very popular theme for game developers. The Big Bass and Fishin Frenzy franchises have lent themselves to a variety of slots, slingo and even bingo rooms. The success of these franchises has spilled over into the minds of other operators too although these tend to be the main ones. Joining them, and hoping to catch a share of the live game show market, is a new release from Evolution. It's called Ice Fishing and it allows players to catch fish and reel in some big wins through innovative bonus rounds. The game is broadcast live and players can interact with the host in real-time.
How To Play Ice Fishing Live
When you first login to play Ice Fishing Live you'll be met with a giant money wheel set in an iceberg. In the corner you'll a small screen where the presenter interacts with players. The base game is the money wheel which comprises of 53 segments. The aim of the game is to bet on the segments where the wheel will stop after each spin. You can wager from as little as 10p per spin. Before each spin you're invited to place your bets. Note there doesn't seem to be a confirm bet option so just be wary of that when you start clicking! There are 23 Leaf 1 segments and 23 Leaf 2 segments. These typically return x1 your wager but occasionally larger multipliers will be added to the wheel. Joining these segments are several bonus segments. There are 4 L'il Blues, 2 Big Oranges and 1 Huge Red. On each turn you can choose to bet on each of the three bonuses or all of them. It's when the wheel stops on these segments that Ice Fishing really gets very interesting.
The Bonus Rounds
If the wheel stops on L'il Blues, Big Oranges or Huge Reds then the screen switches to an Ice Fishing scene, via an underwater shot of the bonus fish swimming under the ice. The presenter can be seen with a fishing rod where they'll then reel in a fish. The caught fish will represent a multiplier win. For blues we think the maximum is up to x5 whilst it's up to x100 for oranges. The big reds can yield up to a x500 win. If the presenter catches a really big fish then the rod isn't enough to reel in the win. They may be joined by a crane, small helicopter or even larger helicopter to help reel in the prize. Whilst writing this review we saw a win of x125 when a Huge Red fish was reeled in by the second of the helicopters. We also saw a Big Orange come in at x138. This was over the base x100 because the segment on the wheel also had a x6 multiplier thrown in!
Ice Fishing Strategy
Is there any strategy to playing Ice Fishing Live? Obviously it's a game of luck that's based on where a spinning wheel ends but by betting on all the bonuses then you're going to have the most chance of winning the big prizes. The stats of previous games are shown on the left side of the screen and at time of writing there were 6 bonus rounds across 24 spins. These bonus rounds yielded some big wins including the x138, x50 and x35. However after the big wins we noted that there were no fish bonuses for several rounds (and on the round that we gave up playing thereby missing out on a x2 Big Orange at x18). One thing to note is that the games are very fast so keep an eye on your wagering as it's quite easy to lose track. At the top of the Ice Fishing Live screen you'll see how long you've been playing, the current time and how much you're up or down.
Our Verdict
Ice Fishing Live is an exciting new addition to the world of live game shows. It's premise is very simple but wonderfully executed. For the most part Ice Fishing Live is just another money wheel game, but the excitement comes in the bonus rounds, especially when the mega-helicopter is brought in to help land the really big multipliers. The host chats away during each round which helps bring some interaction to proceedings and happily get involved with the landing of the bonuses. Live Game Shows and fishing aren't everyone's cup of tea but combined they make an intriguing gaming experience. Full marks to Evolution and it'll be interesting to see whether this is the first of a series of fishing related game shows.
